Schelper says that he's always been an entrepreneur. "Ever since I was nine, I was looking for ways to make money. I had paper routes, I shoveled snow, I did house-sitting. You name it. In college, I had more jobs than you'd ever care to know."
Davanni's began life in 1975 as Pontillo's, an offshoot of a New York family pizza restaurant, opening on Grand and Cleveland Avenues in St. Paul. "New York pizza was better than any other Twin Cities pizza back then," says Schelper. "We saw that it was a product with a niche, and that there was a vacuum here to be filled. We were the first to bring real New York pizza to town."
Other firsts, according to Schelper, were the concepts of calling ahead with your order, the open kitchen ("We had a show to put on."), the wallet-size menu for take-outs, and hot hoagie sandwiches.
Today Davanni’s employs around 1000 people at their 21 Twin Cities Locations.

Brotherhood, Inc. was developed as a grass roots, community-based response to help break the devastating cycles of poverty, unemployment, and incarceration facing young African American males in the twin cities. Nationally, the unemployment rate of black men between the ages of 16-24 is currently 34.5 percent, more than three times the rate for the general U.S. population. In Minnesota, the gap in unemployment between African Americans and whites is the worst in the nation. In response to the social issues facing young African American men, Brotherhood, Inc. seeks to address these issues head on through an array of comprehensive, culturally-sensitive social services, case management, and in-house job opportunities. Brotherhood, Inc.’s goal is to ensure that young
African American males are being successfully reintegrated back into the community, are given access to gainful employment and the tools to become leaders in the community.
